Nick Oliveri and Mark Lanegan – 10.04.2003 @ Larimer Lounge

I uncovered this 2003 show last weekend when going through an old box of DATs.   On a night off between Queens of the Stone Age gigs, Nick Oliveri stopped by the Larimer Lounge for a last-minute solo acoustic set.  The highlights of this set (for me) were the cover of Roky Erickson’s Bloody Hammer, and Mark Lanegan’s appearance on-stage to sing vocals on a few tracks.  I ran out of batteries near the end of the show, but by that point the crowd had become so intoxicated you could barely hear the guitar over the tomfoolery.

Update: Westword still has a review of this show available online.

Kissing Party – 10.16.2009 @ Twist and Shout Records

The release of Radio 1190’s third installment in their superior Local Shakedown CD series was ushered in this month with a hat-trick of record store release parties.  While I was too gutless to brave the game-day Pearl Street crowd for the Bart’s performance, I did make it out to Twist and Shout and Wax Trax.  In this first installment, Kissing Party soldier through busted amps and a rough vocal mix before finally landing in musical bliss half-way through their set.  Hey, when do in-store shows ever come off perfectly??

Hearts of Palm (Nathan and Stephen) – 11.07.2009 @ Hi-Dive

A fitting end to a great ride…thanks to Nathan, Stephen and the rest of the crew for a great few years of music!

Never thought you’d be
   where you are standing today
You had hoped for more
and you can see it on your face
Take a look around
and don’t feel you recognize this place
Never thought your life
was gonna turn out this way

Little squares of paper, folded over again
The greenest grass you’d ever see
The places that we thought we be
We’ll end where we began

It isn’t worth the time
for you to wish your life away
Cause who’s to say
it wouldn’t turn out the same
And to be honest I am thankful for the rain
Cause it made the man
who we see standing here today

The experimental jazz musings of Aenka were the perfect refuge against Sunday’s afternoon drizzle, and the weariness that we all succumb to on the final day of a festival…

Houses – 7.24.2009 @ The UMS

I took a breather from taping at the UMS on Friday night, but thankfully John and Rose from KGNU held down the fort by running mics at the Hi-Dive.  Airshow Mastering was also on-site and kind enough to pass on a board feed.  Combing the two sources led to some quite listenable results…thanks to all involved that weekend!

A Hawk and a Hacksaw – 10.16.2009 @ Hi-Dive

Our neighbors to the south, A Hawk and a Hacksaw, concluded their fall tour in Denver before heading home to Albuquerque.  Despite some pressure from other shows, AHAAH played to a full house, no doubt partially driven by folks who also turned out for openers Damon and Naomi.
