Corey Teruya invited several friends to join him at the Hi-Dive last night in an opening set for Laura Gibson.  The evening was very informal, yet highly enjoyable.  Hello Kavita songs took back seat, making room for some great cover songs and two of Emily Knight’s originals.

Halden Wofford and the Hi-Beams have been frequenting Colorado venues for nearly a decade, never seeming to get the recognition the deserve.  If you’ve never seen this band, the Hi-Beams have monthly residencies at The Skylark, Oskar Blues, and Swing Station.  Check out their cover of All Along the Watchtower from the UMS.  Artists never stop finding ways to reinterpret this song.

A Setting Science (Mark Shusterman and Scott Beck) took a slightly different approach to Denver Does Denver this year.  Instead of working up material by other local bands, they collaborated with filmmaker Rett Rogers, providing an instrumental score to his silent film based around 1930’s Denver imagery.

Colorado’s Hickman-Dalton Gang, a collaboration between Johnny Hickman (Cracker) and Jim Dalton (Railbenders, Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers), is in the studio this month working on a followup to their 2007 EP, creatively titled Volume #1.  ;)  The pair opened for Roger Clyne at the Soiled Dove Underground this week, and were joined by proficient multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Lawton (Big Head Todd and the Monsters).

I stopped in Tulsa on the way home to catch the wonderful husband-wife duo Shovels and Rope, pairing Cary Ann Hearst with Michael Trent of The Films.  In addition to their combined effort, both musicians have recently released new solo records–Michael with The Winner, Cary Ann with Lions and Lambs (available at shows) and the Are You Ready to Die EP.
