Rachael Pollard – 9.16.2010 @ Yellow Feather Coffee

Rachael Pollard was one of the artists I regretting missing at the UMS, especially since it was her first show of 2010.  Rachael doesn’t play around town as often as we’d like, but raising a family is hard work!  She dropped by Yellow Feather Coffee this Thursday for beautiful set in front of a respectful crowd.  Porlolo, Golden Shoulders, and Brett Shady filled out the bill.

Yellow Feather Coffee just opened in July (at 742 Santa Fe) and brews some damn fine coffee.  Be sure to visit the next time you near the Art District.  Jason and Natalie have started bringing in all-ages concerts and unique art shows, so keep an eye on their Facebook page or website for upcoming events.

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – 9.11.2010 @ Hi-Dive

(Photo by Tim Weilert of Something Like Sound.)

As previously noted, Owen Ashworth is on his last U.S tour ever as Casiotone for the Painfully Alone.  He stopped in Denver last night to serve up one more helping of tunes awash in disappointment, desolation, aspiration, and love. While a little light on early albums (only one song each from Twinkle Echo and Pocket Symphonies), CFTPA nevertheless covered the breadth of a 13 year catalog. Two rare covers also emerged, Christmas in Oakland and John Prine’s Christmas in Prison. Australian trio Otouto backed Owen for most of the show, and also opened with a set of their own material.

With the vibes relocated to Minnesota, Vibes on Velvet performances have become understandably rare.  Megan Wise was back in Denver during The UMS, and brought out her vibes to join Tony Asnicar (guitar) and Susan Phelan (bass) in offering up a unique brand of western jazz.

Safe Boating is No Accident – 9.03.2010 @ Hi-Dive

Of the four CD releases in Denver on this particular night, I was only able to capture the Safe Boating is No Accident show.  Filled with therapy, conspiracy theories, (staged) fights and more, this show was quite a spectacle!  The band invited Yuzo Nieto (Pink Hawks, Pee-Pee) to play saxophone on several songs, and finished out the night with a nod to Pee-Pee, who would be playing their last show on the following night.

Pee-Pee – 9.04.2010 @ Mercury Cafe

Serving as both a CD release and farewell show, Pee-Pee took the stage one last time Saturday night at the Mercury Cafe.  This performance revealed a relaxed, unhurried version of the band, quite different than cacophonies of the past.  Here’s to the best of luck for Doo Crowder on his upcoming journeys.
